A lifelong resident of Gonzales, Louisiana, Johnny Berthelot knows what it means to be a southern Louisianan; in fact, these roots have shaped who he is and everything he represents. Having attended St. Theresa Catholic School, Gonzales High School and East Ascension High School, Johnny was networking with local citizens before he even finished high school. In 1969 he graduated from East Ascension High and, a year later, he graduated from the New Orleans Barber College. Additionally, Johnny attended the LSU Continuing Education Program in Real Estate, completing the course in 1975.

Jonny Berthelot’s public service began over 35 years ago when he was elected to the Gonzales Town Council in 1976 and then to the Gonzales City Council in 1980. While serving on the council, he led key initiatives for the Fire and Recreation Departments. Having demonstrated his merit, in 1980, he received the highest number of votes in the Aldermen Election and was selected as Mayor Pro-Tempore by the Council.

He continued to achieve political success by being elected as Mayor of the City of Gonzales in 1984. Mayor Johnny Berthelot proved his conservative values by cutting taxes and building the city’s financial reserve. His achievements were so impressive that he ran for Mayor unopposed in 1988, 1992, 1996, 2000 and 2004.

Johnny is married to the lovely Paula Chauvin Berthelot. The couple raised three wonderful children: Shelley, Kelley and Brad. Now that their children are grown, the Berthelots enjoy spoiling their five grandchildren: Payton, Reid, Lennon, Gabe and Grant.
